Understanding Your GPA

All Wake Tech students are graded on a four-point scale, and the grade point average, or GPA, is calculated using grades, points per credit hour and hours attempted.

Grade              Point Value                 Description

A                             4                                Excellent

B                             3                                Very Good

C                             2                                Satisfactory

D                             1                                Poor

F                             0                                 Failing

Some grades are not used to determine a grade point average, such as AU (Audit), I (Incomplete) or W (Withdrew). Transition and co-requisite English and math courses also are not included in determining a student’s grade point average.

For more details on Wake Tech’s grading policies, check the college catalog.

Each semester, Wake Tech will calculate the student’s GPA for courses taken that term, as well as the cumulative GPA for all courses taken at Wake Tech up to that point.

You can use our GPA calculator to figure out your own GPA. It includes step-by-step instructions, as well as information on how well you need to do in your current classes to boost your GPA to a specific goal.

How GPA affects financial aid

Students must maintain a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA and complete at least 67% of the cumulative credit hours attempted to be eligible for financial aid.

Students who don’t meet those standards will be placed on financial aid warning status for one semester. Students who fail to meet those standards at the end of that semester will be ineligible to receive financial aid.

Contact Wake Tech’s Financial Aid Office for more details.

How GPA affects university transfers

Students must have at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA to transfer to any University of North Carolina System campus. Other four-year colleges also will examine a student’s GPA when considering whether to grant admission.

How GPA affects graduation

Students must have a 2.0 GPA or higher in courses tied to their program of study in order to graduate from Wake Tech.
