Neuro Courses

Learn about the human nervous system or prepare for neurodiagnostic certification exams with these courses.

The courses combining in-person and online learning. Students meet in class via Microsoft Teams and then complete further study via Blackboard online from their computers.

Industry-recognized credential: Registered Electroencephalographic Technologist (R.EEG.T.) and Certification for Neurophysiological Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM), from the American Board of Electroencephalographic and Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET)

Complete course in: Three months or less

Industry Recognized Credential

Professional licensure

Wake Tech academic programs (credit and non-credit) that are designed to lead to professional licenses are tied to North Carolina or national certifications. If you intend to pursue professional licenses outside North Carolina once you have completed your academic program at Wake Tech, please refer to the Professional Licensure section of the college's distance education authorization page for additional information.

  • More Details
This course is offered to both graduates of the EDT program and EDT professionals in the field to prepare for their R. EEG T. exam. The course is lecture only and is fully online to allow students from across the region to participate. Principles covered follow the practice analysis for the R. EEG T. provided by ABRET. These include patient history, neuroanatomy/neurophysiology, elements of a routine study, instrumentation, clinical correlates, ACNS guidelines, infection control, patient safety, and ethics.

Course Objectives

Describe the basic structure and function of the nervous system, especially the brain and intracranial structures

Explain common indications for EEG

Identify the requirements of a routine EEG, including activations, settings, montages and documentation

Recognize criteria for special populations and different age groups

Describe theories underlying optimal electrode application and placement, such as 10-20 head marking and appropriate electrode selection

Describe electronics and instrumentation applicable for neurologic testing

Explain techniques to enhance and localize waveforms

Differentiate patterns in EEG from normal, abnormal and artifactual

Classify and quantify seizure patterns and types

Explain ethics and regulatory standards

Describe infection control and patient safety measures

Outline of instruction

Week 1:
Articulate the importance of accurate measurement and marking for electrode placement
Compare and contrast 10-20 and 10-10 placement and nomenclature
Compare and contrast different electrode types and appropriate uses
Identify instrument controls and appropriate settings for filters, gain, paper speed, etc.
Describe electronics applicable to neurologic testing
Quiz

Week 2:
Identify the requirements of a routine EEG according to ACNS Guidelines
Describe the common activations and their contraindications/effects
Explain settings and how/when to change them
Differentiate between various montages and explain benefits of each
Practice appropriate documentation for study, report and chart
Quiz

Week 3:
Describe the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of the brain
Describe the neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of intracranial structures
Explain the Circle of Willis and other vascular components
Identify common indications for EEG
Quiz

Review of first four weeks
Exam Week 1-4

Week 5:
Describe techniques to evaluate, enhance and localize waveforms
Recognize common artifacts and identify appropriate troubleshooting methods
Identify normal awake EEG patterns
Identify normal asleep EEG pattens
Identify normal variants
Quiz

Week 6:
Identify abnormal EEG patterns
Describe the nomenclature describing critical care EEG
Quiz

Week 7:
Classify and quantify seizure patterns and types
Quiz

Week 8:
Examine regulatory standards
Discuss the Code of Ethics
Describe patient safety measures, including infection control and electrical safety
