Description
In the initial Pediatric Life Support (PALS) provider course, is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory or cardiovascular emergencies, and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients. Pre-course preparation. didactic instruction and active participation in skills stations and simulated cases will be used to enhance the recognition and intervention of respiratory emergencies, shock and Cardiopulmonary arrest. These simulations are designed to reinforce the importance of a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, basic life support, PALS treatment algorithms, and effective resuscitation team dynamics.
Course Objectives
  1. Describe the timely recognition and interventions required to prevent respiratory and cardiac arrest in any pediatric patient.
  2. Describe the systematic approach to pediatric assessment by using the initial impression, primary and secondary assessments, and diagnostic tests.
  3. Describe priorities and specific interventions for infants and children with respiratory and/or circulatory emergencies
  4. Explain the importance of effective team dynamics, including individual roles and responsibilities, during a pediatric resuscitation
  5. Describe the key elements of postresuscitation management
  6. Perform effective, high quality CPR when appropriate
  7. Perform effective respiratory management within the scope of practice
  8. Select and apply appropriate cardiorespiratory monitoring
  9. Select and administer the appropriate medications and electrical therapies when presented with an arrhythmia scenario
  10. Establish rapid vascular access to administer fluid and medications.
  11. Demonstrate effective communication and team dynamics both as a team member and as team leader

Ability to preform CPR
Reading and interpreting ECG rhythm strips
Knowledge of basic resuscitation pharmacology
Pre-course self assessment on the PALS student website and bring a printout of their score (must be a 70% or higher)to class
Text and Supplies Needed
PALS provider Student Manual Child and infant CPR & Airway manikins, AED trainer, BVM, O2 delivery devices, color coded tape, IO drill and needles, Respiratory , cardiac and IV supplies/medications, ET tubes and larynoscope blades

Requirements for Successful Completion of this Course
  1. Attendance 90% or above
  2. Participation
  3. To successfully complete the course the student must attend the course and participate in the course. Scenerios must be completed to the satisfaction of the instructor and the AHA guidelines and a minimum of 84% must be scored on any written examination
