Wake Tech offers courses on the regulations and procedures to conduct vehicle safety and emissions inspections to prepare you for the state certification exam.
The NC On-Board Diagnostics Vehicle Emission Inspection course is designed to meet the training and licensing requirements for North Carolina's vehicle emissions inspection program. Likewise, the NC Vehicle Safety Inspection course meets the training and licensing requirements for the state's vehicle safety inspection program. Both inspection programs are administered by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) License and Theft Bureau.
- Classes are eight hours of instruction
- Registration fee covers all material used during class
- Students must bring their own safety glasses
Before the course begins, each student's employer will need to complete the most recent version of the DMV's LT-310 Mechanic Application form:
- At the top, place an "X" next to "Add Employer" and next to "New License" or "License Renewal." If working at additional employer stations, enter the station next to "Change."
- The Mechanic's Information section must be completed and signed by the technician.
- The Employer Information section must be completed and signed by an official of the station.
Any omissions will cause a delay in processing by Wake Tech and the DMV.
Upon successful completion of the class, Wake Tech is required by the DMV to submit the latest revision of the original, completed LT-310 form.
Industry-recognized credential: Vehicle Emission Inspection Mechanic License and North Carolina State Safety Vehicle Inspectors

It is designed to meet the licensing (and licensing renewal) requirements for the OBD II Emissions Inspection Program administered by the NC Division of Motor Vehicles, License and Theft Bureau. Participants must bring safety glasses, a state-issued ID, station number and a signed LT-310. DMV certification will be issued upon full payment of tuition. NOTE: Successful completion of this course requires 100% attendance and satisfactory class participation; late students may not be admitted.
