Students Showcase Impressive Skills

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 12, 2024) – Wake Tech students showed off their creativity and hard work Friday at a Student Showcase for multiple degree programs on the college's Southern Wake Campus.

Students from various Associate in Applied Science degree programs, including Simulation and Game Development (SGD), Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts, Hospitality Management and Cosmetology displayed a variety of creations to demonstrate the skills they have learned in the classroom:

  • SGD students created innovative 2D and 3D artwork and games. Families, friends and other students who attended the event were able to play the games and pick their favorites.
  • Culinary students presented an ice carving and fruit and vegetable carvings, and they demonstrated how to shape bread dough into braided loaves and double-knot dinner rolls. They also handed out homemade chocolate chip cookies.
  • Baking students displayed several sugar and chocolate showpieces from recent competitions.
  • Students from the Hospitality program showed off dinner napkin folds and table settings.
  • Cosmetology students demonstrated hair styling techniques and dazzling manicure creations.

Carley Windley, who is pursuing an SGD degree, came up with the idea for the event, which was organized by the SGD Game Club and sponsored by Student Activities.

"We wanted to host an event that would allow students to practice their presentation skills," Windley said. "But you don't have to be a game development or culinary student to enjoy games and food! The Student Showcase is for everyone!"

George Cox, SGD associate professor and Game Club advisor, said he hopes the Student Showcase helps build a stronger community on campus.

"The event gave students a chance to share their creative endeavors with their friends and other students," Cox said. "It was a great opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of what their peers are learning at Wake Tech."

Aurore Locklear, SGD assistant professor and Game Club advisor, agrees.

"The students made connections with students in other programs," Locklear said. "They worked hard to prepare for the event and to demonstrate their creativity and their skills, and their friends and guests were really impressed! We are very proud of what they accomplished."

This is the first Student Showcase for multiple programs held at Wake Tech, but organizers said they hope to hold a similar event next year.
