Wake Tech requires students in all degree, diploma or certificate programs to make satisfactory academic progress, defined as a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0, based on credit hours attempted, throughout their enrollment.
Semester and cumulative GPAs are calculated at the end of each Fall and Spring semester, and students who meet the GPA requirements remain in good academic standing. Students who do not make satisfactory academic progress will be placed on Academic Warning, Academic Suspension or Academic Probation.
A student is placed on Academic Warning the first time their cumulative GPA falls below 2.0.
Wake Tech places a hold on the student's account until the student completes a College Strong course via Blackboard. College Strong is a free, online support course that provides strategies for effectively managing your time, understanding your learning style and interacting with your professors.
The student returns to good academic standing once the cumulative GPA returns to 2.0 or higher.
A student is placed on Academic Suspension if their cumulative GPA remains below 2.0 for a second straight semester.
Wake Tech again places a hold on the student's account, and the student will be dropped from classes, will have to sit out for one semester and will not be allowed to participate in any college functions. Any tuition payments that have been made will be refunded, and any applicable financial aid will be canceled. The student must attend an Academic Success Workshop through the ILC and meet with an academic advisor to complete and sign a "success contract" at least one month before the next term begins.
Once the workshop and contract requirements have been met, the student is placed on Academic Probation.
A student on Academic Suspension who has completed reinstatement requirements will be on Academic Probation for the semester.
Wake Tech will release the hold on the student's account, and the student can return to classes. The student must uphold the provisions of the signed "success contract" developed with an academic advisor.
The student will return to good academic standing when their cumulative GPA returns to 2.0 or higher. If the semester GPA is 2.0 or higher but the cumulative GPA is still below 2.0, the student remains on Academic Probation for another semester. If the semester and cumulative GPAs are again below 2.0, the student returns to Academic Suspension for the following semester.
NOTE: Students in special academic or support programs and students receiving financial aid or veterans' benefits must also meet any additional academic requirements for those programs. Contact Financial Aid or Veteran Services for more information.
