Medical Assisting Clinical Locations

A supervised practicum of 240 contact hours in a health care setting, demonstrating the knowledge, skills and behaviors of the MAERB Core Curriculum in performing clinical and administrative duties, must be completed prior to graduation. On-site supervision of the student is provided by an individual who has knowledge of the medical assisting profession. The program ensures that the supervised practicum and instruction of students are meaningful and parallel in content and concept with the material presented in lecture and laboratory sessions. Clinical sites afford each student a variety of experiences. The program ensures that students achieve the MAERB Core Curriculum psychomotor and affective competencies before performing them during the supervised practicum.

Clinical practicum is a supervised, hands-on experience in which students are placed at a clinical site – a physician’s office or other ambulatory health care setting – during their last semester of a diploma program. A site supervisor, assigned by the physician or office manager, serves as the student’s preceptor at the site. Clinical sites are in the Wake, Durham, Orange and Johnston counties. Any expenses incurred (fees for parking or the use of public transportation, etc.) are the responsibility of the student. Students may not refuse a practicum assignment.
