Students also can use the associate degree to pursue a four-year degree.

Course work includes classroom and experiential activities oriented toward an overview of the following:

• Chemical dependency
• Psychological/sociological process
• 12 Core Functions
• Intervention techniques with individuals in groups
• Follow-up activities with recovering clients

Graduates should qualify for positions as substance abuse counselors, DWI counselors, halfway house workers, residential facility employees and substance education specialists.

With educational and clinical experience, graduates may be able to obtain certification by the North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board. Eligibility should be addressed directly with the board.

Classes are offered in seated and online formats, as well as a mix of in-person and virtual instruction. Some courses are not offered online, so the degree cannot be earned completely online.
