The Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation (ASTP) degree is designed for students who plan to become middle or high school mathematics or science teachers.
The degree prepares students to transfer to a four-year college or university to complete a bachelor’s degree and pursue teacher licensure.
Students complete a strong foundation in mathematics, science, general education and teacher preparation coursework while developing knowledge and skills related to teaching and learning, adolescent development, educational technology, classroom diversity and effective instructional practices. The program provides opportunities for students to connect their content knowledge with the principles and practices of effective mathematics and science instruction.
The Program Planning Guide outlines the courses required for the degree and helps students select mathematics and science courses that align with their intended teaching field and transfer institution.
Graduates are well-prepared to transfer to a four-year college or university, complete a bachelor's degree in mathematics, science or education with an approved teacher licensure pathway, and work toward North Carolina teacher licensure in middle grades or secondary mathematics or science. Wake Tech maintains partnerships and transfer agreements with colleges and universities across North Carolina to support a smooth transition from the associate degree to a bachelor's degree and a career as a mathematics or science educator.
