Technical Standards

Students in the Architectural Technology program must meet the following standards:

  • Conceptualize and visualize two- and three-dimensional objects and spaces
  • Hold and perform drawing knowledge of manual drafting tools and equipment
  • Read architectural drawings at multiple scales, schematics and other documents
  • Use and perform measuring with tape measures at least 25 feet long
  • Read and comprehend architectural and engineering scales
  • Clearly distinguish subtle differences in color for architectural renderings and digital images
  • Work and communicate with co-workers in a group physically and virtually
  • Work at a computer workstation for up to 10 hours per day
  • Use digital screens with animation and moving content
  • Work at a computer workstation while sitting or standing
  • Wear hard hats, safety glasses, steel-toe shoes and other safety-related equipment as required by the industry and OSHA guidelines
  • Ability with geometry, algebra and trigonometry
  • Read and write in English
  • Proficient with basic computer skills
  • Analyze and problem-solve individually and in teams or groups
  • Hold and lift 35 pounds, equivalent to concrete masonry building materials
  • Work with different leadership styles
  • Make physical models with a range of physical materials, such as wood, metal, concrete, chipboard, etc.
  • Use physical model-making tools equivalent to metal cork-backed rulers, X-acto knives, Olfa knives, small hand saws, Dremel tools and equivalent for design project and case study model making
  • Work in spaces that produce dust, sawdust and residue from hand tools, mechanical tools and automated tools
  • Operate light-construction hand tools and equipment, such as saws, hammers, drills, etc.
