Wake Tech's Annual Culinary Arts Showcase Returns to The Raleigh Convention Center

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 12, 2011) - If you could hit the open road and head out on a great adventure, what would it look like? For Brittany Sattler and Anna Lamm of Once in a Blue Moon Bakery in Cary, it would be a ride on the "Yellow Brick Road!" Their "Wizard of Oz" tiered cake took first place in a live two-hour cake decorating competition at Wake Tech's annual Culinary Arts Showcase. The Culinary Arts Showcase attracted more than 2,000 people to the Raleigh Convention Center. Five two-person teams squared off to create cakes based on the theme, Cruisin' the Open Road.

In addition to the cake challenge, food lovers of all ages were treated to a dazzling display of culinary artistry - award-winning showpieces, cakes, pastries, and cold food platters - all of which were judged the day before by certified American Culinary Federation judges. Sixty-five students from across North Carolina and 20 professionals from five states competed, making it the second-largest ACF-sanctioned competition in the U.S.

Spectators also watched an ice carving exhibition by Wake Tech students and instructors, and enjoyed food from some of the Triangle's top restaurants, including Angus Barn, 42nd Street Oyster Bar, The Pit, and Second Empire. The North Carolina Department of Agriculture's Goodness Grows Campaign served up locally grown treats.

US Food Service was the title sponsor for the event. Proceeds benefit the Wake Tech Culinary Arts Fund. The Culinary Arts Showcase started as Wake Tech's Annual Pastry Show in 1994 as a final project for culinary and baking students in the second year of Wake Tech associate's degree program. Wake Tech offers Wake County's only full culinary program accredited by the American Culinary Federation (ACF).
