Wake Tech Receives Unprecedented Financial Gift
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 9, 2011) - Dr. Stephen Scott, president of Wake Tech Community College, announced today that the college has received an unprecedented financial gift. The late Harold and Shirley Brenner, of Cary, bequeathed a gift of $500,000 to the Wake Tech Foundation - the largest individual cash donation in the history of the college. The announcement was made at the dedication of the Harold and Shirley Brenner Learning Commons in the Bruce I. Howell Library Education Building on Wake Tech's Main Campus. A plaque honoring the late couple was also unveiled.
"The Brenners were excellent role models for all of us," Dr. Scott said, "putting great value on education and staying connected to their community. Wake Tech and its students are indeed fortunate to benefit from their generous legacy."
The Brenner donation will fund endowed scholarships for students in medical assisting, law enforcement, welding, plumbing, and other technical programs that can be completed in a year or less. Each year, up to 40 Wake Tech students will receive the scholarships.
Harold and Shirley Brenner learned about Wake Tech's role in the community from their niece, Mable Howell, and her husband, former Wake Tech President Bruce I. Howell. "My aunt and uncle believed in a strong work ethic," said Mrs. Howell, "and felt it was important to help young people acquire the necessary education and skills to become productive members of the community."
The Bruce I. Howell Library Education Building was built in 1988 and was renovated recently to include additional computers, seating, and study areas for students. Gently-used furniture for the Harold and Shirley Brenner Learning Commons was donated by Central Carolina Community College.
