RALEIGH, N.C. (September 2, 2011) – Let the games begin! Wake Tech welcomed the sights and sounds of college sports to campus this week for the first time in its 50-year history. The college renovated its Early Childhood Education Building on Main Campus, adding a physical education wing that includes a 17,000 square foot gymnasium. The athletic facility, a first for Wake Tech, allows the college to host volleyball and basketball games, with seating for up to 1,000 spectators.
Women's volleyball inaugurated the gym with the first game - and first win - of the season. The Lady Eagles beat Sandhills Community College 3-0 in the first match of a three-match tournament between WTCC, Sandhills CC and the College of Central Florida.
"We're extremely excited to have ‘home turf' for our sports program," says WTCC Athletics Director Barry Street. "This is a huge step for Wake Tech, and we hope it will engage local supporters and bring them to campus for our games."
The new Early Childhood & Physical Education Building on Main Campus also includes locker rooms, a weight room and a dance/yoga room for physical education classes. Wake Tech employees have access to the facilities during select hours of the day.
A pep rally in the new gym is planned for October to help kick off the men's and women's basketball seasons which start in November. The college hopes to eventually add athletic fields to the Northern Wake Campus for other sports.
Wake Tech's athletics program started in the fall of 2008 and is now has one of the most extensive community college athletic programs in the state. Wake Tech is a member of the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA), Division 1, Region X. More information and game schedules are available at http://athletics.waketech.edu .
