U.S Representative George Holding Visits Wake Tech
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 19, 2013) - U.S. Representative George Holding visited Wake Tech’s Main Campus today, to learn more about the unprecedented enrollment growth at the college and to get a firsthand look at some of its most popular programs. Four of Wake Tech’s five campuses are located in the 13th congressional district, which Holding represents.
Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott told Congressman Holding that enrollment for this semester (classes started Friday) is 6.5% greater than last fall – and that Wake Tech is now the second-fastest growing large community college in the country.
“Wake Tech continues to expand capacity to keep pace with the needs of the community,” Scott said. “With our population continuing to grow and unemployment remaining high, Wake Tech’s ability to provide education and training is more important than ever.” The college plans to build additional facilities, including a new RTP Campus in Morrisville, with funds from the $200 million bond referendum approved by Wake County voters last fall.
Wake Tech administrators gave Congressman Holding a tour of some of the programs in greatest demand, including Automotive and Heavy Equipment Technology. Wake Tech hopes to add a Heavy Equipment Operators program if grant funding can be secured for the training simulators the program will require. Department Head Ronnie Lowe told Congressman Holding he could fill classes immediately. Heavy equipment industry representatives confirmed that interest is high and that more and more jobs are opening up as operators reach retirement age.
Congressman Holding also visited Wake Tech’s highly-regarded Culinary Arts programs as well as Certified Cisco Networking Associate classes.
