Wake Tech Students Win National Scholarships

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 12, 2015) - Two Wake Tech students have been awarded national scholarships from the mikeroweWORKS Foundation that will help them launch careers in equipment technology and maintenance. Joshua Schmidt and Jed Widrick will each receive $1,000 from the foundation, established by the host of cable television’s “Dirty Jobs.” Both students will graduate in 2015 with an associate’s degree in Heavy Equipment and Transport Technology. The mikeroweWORKS Foundation scholarships are given to top equipment technology students from institutions accredited by Associated Equipment Distributors.

In a special presentation today, Schmidt and Widrick received their checks and scholarship certificates. Schmidt was selected after earning a cumulative GPA of 4.0 at the end of the 2014 fall semester. He is a former marine who is currently employed by MHC Kenworth in Raleigh, a used truck dealer; he was hired after making contact with his employer at the Heavy Equipment Career Fair in 2014. He will graduate in May.

Widrick also earned a GPA of 4.0 and is sponsored by James River Equipment in the John Deere Technician Program. He will complete Work Based Learning this summer and plans to graduate in December.

Given the significant cost of acquiring a proper set of high-quality tools, these scholarships are a big help to students entering an equipment technician career. “The scholarships support the equipment maintenance technicians of tomorrow by providing them with high-quality tools today,” says Patricia Godin, Dean of Applied Engineering and Technologies.
