Neurodiagnostic Technology

Technical Standards

Graduates of the Neurodiagnostic Technology (NDT) program should be able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate knowledge by competently performing all NDT procedures
  • Recognize, differentiate and document technical issues, artifacts and clinical changes during acquisition testing procedures
  • Communicate effectively with all clinical team members before, during and after NDT procedures
  • Perform NDT procedures in a time-effective manner
  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients and loved ones when explaining NDT procedures

The following technical standards reflect performance abilities necessary for a student to successfully complete the requirements of the Neurodiagnostic Technology curriculum. Read the standards carefully and seek clarification if necessary.

Strength, coordination and manual dexterity
  • Move quickly and easily about the workplace as needed
  • Move and position patients and equipment and manipulate equipment as necessary
  • Perform CPR/life support procedures in accordance with accepted practice standards
  • Able to stand or remain in a fixed position for up to two hours
  • Dexterously measure and mark patients' heads
Hearing (normal and noisy situations)
  • Understand verbal communication
  • Understand telephone or recorded information
  • Recognize commands, paging systems and alarms
Communication skills
  • Communicate in English, both verbally and in written format, clearly and precisely
  • Effectively speaking with patient, family members, physicians and staff members of different ages and education levels.
Visual acuity
  • Read medical records and computer screens and obtain accurate readings/images for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
  • Look at computer screens for 30 minutes or longer
Maturity and emotional stability
  • Make decisions and act appropriately in life-threatening situations. Provide emotional support to patients and family members when situation requires it.
  • Tolerate stressful, unpleasant, unnerving or congested situations in a stable, composed manner so that job performance is not compromised
  • Conduct oneself in a professional, courteous manner, show discretion, maintain patient confidentiality, be on time for required assignments and be responsible for one's own actions
Intellectual capacity
  • Gather and evaluate data to assess patient status and make clinical judgments accordingly
  • Adapt procedures to individual patient needs
  • Respond professionally and appropriately to new and/or patient-life-threatening situations
  • Perform required calculations
  • Access and enter information into computer systems
Teamwork and flexibility
  • Able to act as a patient in turns for measuring, marking, application, activations, stimulations and simulations as necessary to allow each student to practice clinical skills on a fully responsive patient
  • Able to understand others' perspectives and needs
