Wake Tech Launches Second MOOC Venture

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 4, 2014) - Current and future college students who need extra help in chemistry can now take a free online Wake Tech course called a MOOC – a Massive Open Online Course. Chemistry Concepts (CheMOOC) is Wake Tech’s second MOOC, which invites large-scale participation and provides open access to higher education via the web. The self-paced course is designed to help students understand and apply basic chemistry concepts – and succeed in college-level science classes. CheMOOC is completely online, free of charge, and available to students anywhere in the world.

“We are truly excited to be able to help students prepare for academic success in this way,” says Tonya Forbes, Associate Vice President of Arts and Sciences at Wake Tech. “In addition to helping some students to place into college-level chemistry courses, CheMOOC can be used as supplemental resource for upper-level science courses.”

The Chemistry Concepts MOOC covers several topics, including measurements, matter, energy, atomic theory, bonding, molecular structure, nomenclature, balancing equations, stoichiometry, solutions, acids and bases, gases, and basic organic chemistry. Students can sign up for the course directly by visiting https://www.coursesites.com/s/_CHMMOOC

Wake Tech has extensive expertise in distance education, and the college has pioneered the MOOC initiative. Wake Tech became the first community college in the state (and one of the first in the nation) to offer a MOOC when it launched Introductory Algebra Review last year. That course supplements seated classes in developmental math and helps students prepare for the NC diagnostic math exam. Other Wake Tech MOOCs are planned, to supplement instruction in areas such as digital literacy and college-level reading and writing fundamentals.
