Resource Center For Veterans Opens

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 9, 2016) - Military veterans studying at Wake Tech have a new place to mingle and get important information about benefits and resources. The Military and Veterans Resource Center opened today on the Northern Wake Campus. Wake Tech’s student body includes a number of veterans and active duty military.

The new resource center will serve as a home base for students, with space for relaxing and socializing as well as computer work stations. Vets and members of the military can complete academic assignments, work on resumes, or search for employment. They can also research health care benefits, financial resources, and other services available to them.

“Wake Tech is a military-friendly college,” says Sam Strickland, SVP for Military and Veteran Programs. “We want our veteran and military students to know we appreciate their service. This center was designed as a welcoming place for them to find community as well as resources.”

The grand opening for the Military and Veterans Resource Center took place in the Building E Lecture Hall on the Northern Wake Campus. The event included music from the 440th Army Band and a keynote address by Maj. General Cornell Wilson, USMC Retired, Military Advisor to the Governor of North Carolina. It was followed by a ribbon cutting and tour.

Wake Tech provides a variety of programs and services for military veterans and their family members pursuing education, training, and professional development: accelerated training programs, assistance with VA benefits and financial aid, and options for translating military experience into workplace credentials.

The new resource center centralizes these programs and services. Earlier this year, Wake Tech started issuing special student ID badges for veterans, and began “Green Zone” training for faculty and staff across the college. The training educates employees about the issues and concerns veterans face, so those employees can offer assistance or lend an ear to veterans in need.
