In this professional development course, you'll get the teacher training you need to deal effectively with serious discipline problems and help even the most challenging students you're teaching make more responsible choices. You'll discover how to use a new research-based six-step approach to solve severe and chronic discipline problems, including bullying, fighting, using abusive language, stealing, and refusing to work. This course provides transition support for individuals on the autism spectrum. It addresses skills and strategies required for success in post-secondary and employment settings, including organization and executive functioning, emotion regulation, and social skills.

Course Objectives

Create an individualized goal plan for future career and college goals and learn how to monitor success towards reaching their goals.

Attend Career Counseling sessions with a T-STEP instructor and access appropriate career counseling resources.

Learn organization and time management strategies that will be practiced in class and in a weekly volunteer campus internship setting.

Learn and practice self-monitoring and self-reward strategies.

Attend Higher Education Counseling sessions with a T-STEP facilitator and access appropriate resources.

Learn college and employment-related social skills (including how to seek help when needed). Strategies will be practiced in class and volunteer campus internship settings.

Learn strategies for coping with distress and appropriately accepting corrective feedback from an instructor or supervisor. Strategies will be practiced in class and volunteer campus internship settings.

Autism Technician/Registered Behavior Technician Training

Become a paraprofessional in the field of Autism services. Learn principles and strategies for working with adults and children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This course provides an understanding of ASD and best practices for assisting those with functional communication acquisition, social skill development, and behavior change. You'll learn about Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), an empirically validated method for changing behaviors and teaching social and adaptive living skills such as self-care. Successful completion of the course results in a certificate of completion for the 40-hour Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) course, which can lead to certification as an RBT from the Behavior Analysis Certification Board (BACB). The Registered Behavior Technician is a paraprofessional certified in behavior analysis who practices under the direction of a supervisor. Demand is high due to the prevalence of ASD and North Carolina's insurance mandates for ABA Services. Certification will help students become more marketable and increase opportunities for employment and advancement in the field. Students interested in proceeding to certification can take a competency assessment and schedule the RBT exam. During the course, students will be able to meet with potential employers.

Learn to describe behavior and environment in observable and measurable terms

Learn technical language and have functional, working knowledge of behavior analytic principles

Effectively implement the goals, targets and protocols written and overseen by a supervising clinician

Clear understanding of ethical and professional behavior in the human services field

Prepare students to sit for the Registered Behavior Technician (RBT®) credential by teaching the skills (identified by the BACB®) in the RBT® Task List (2nd ed.) included in the outline
