Wake Tech Key Organizer of Popular East Coast Game Conference

Annual Event Returns to Raleigh

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 18, 2023) – The annual East Coast Game Conference (ECGC) returns to the Raleigh Convention Center April 18-20. ECGC, which draws thousands each year, is the largest gathering of video game professionals and future game developers on the East Coast, with sessions led by industry experts and opportunities for networking and collaboration.

Staff and faculty with Wake Tech's Simulation and Game Development program are key organizers of the annual event. Dozens of Wake Tech students also volunteer.

Plans for the three-day event include live presentations on trending industry topics by seasoned professionals, including Wake Tech faculty.

A career lounge, run by Wake Tech SGD Department Head and Associate Professor Ken Turner, will host portfolio reviewers and a chance for one-on-one feedback, as well as talks and tips on how to land that first industry job. The expo hall will also host exhibitors showcasing their company, products and educational or employment opportunities.

Turner says the conference is great exposure for students.

"ECGC allows our students to network with game development veterans on a variety of topics," he said. "The conference allows them to learn about game development topics, participate in real world feedback and learn how the industry works from people who are already in it."

Wake Tech has one of the most successful Simulation and Game Development programs in the region, providing students with a broad background in the simulation and video game industry. The curriculum includes practical applications in creative arts, visual arts, 3D modeling, animation, design, programming and project management.

The college is also among a handful in the nation where game development is an academic degree and gaming is a recognized intercollegiate sport. Wake Tech launched esports as part of its intercollegiate athletics program in 2020. The college is affiliated with the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports and won its first NJCAAE Spring Championship in Overwatch in 2021. Wake Tech also captured the Open Division Rocket League Championship in Fall 2022. The college has esports arenas on the RTP and Southern Wake campuses.
