College Hosts Regional Math Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 23, 2023) – Middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today in the NC Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech's Mathematics and Physics Department. The competition, held on the Southern Wake Campus for the first time in three years due to the pandemic, included nearly 200 students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, Lee, Guilford and Vance counties.

Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they've completed: Levels I, II, and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who've had more than three years of math.

Top honors went to:

  • Harry Liu, Ligon GT Magnet Middle School, Level I
  • Jason Sliwowski, Smith Middle School, Level I
  • Alex Liu, Mills Park Middle School, Level II
  • Aaron Zhu, Davis Drive Middle School, Level III
  • Jason Lee, Baeum Homeschool, Comprehensive

The top performers move on to state finals competitions in their categories.

Wake Tech is one of nine regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The regional contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, homeschools and private schools.
