Award-Winning Creativity at Elite Baking Competition

RALEIGH, N.C. (February 27, 2025) – Wake Tech students triumphed Thursday, taking home 33 medals for their dazzling cakes and showpieces at the North Carolina American Culinary Federation (ACF) competition at Scott Northern Wake Campus. It is the largest competition of its kind in the country.

Eleven entries won gold medals, 10 entries received silver medals and 12 earned bronze. All entries were judged on artistry, craftsmanship, theme and presentation and were awarded points using the official ACF scale. Every entry won a medal!

Mei Goodrich was awarded a gold medal and won "Best in Show" for a wedding cake with purple peonies inspired by her time at Wake Tech.

"Peonies are known for representing growth and prosperity," said Goodrich, who is graduating in May. "I have grown in my skills, knowledge and confidence while pursuing my degree in Baking & Pastry Arts. I am excited for the future!"

Chef Aaron Stumb, department head for Culinary Arts, thanked the judges, who gave suggestions and recommendations to students about their work.

"Learn to embrace feedback from judges, instructors and eventually your customers," said Stumb. "It will make you a better chef and a better person."

The ACF competition is a class project for students in Wake Tech's associate degree programs in Culinary Arts and Baking and Pastry Arts. The programs prepare students for quick entry into the culinary and baking professions. With experience, graduates can move from beginner jobs to more advanced positions, such as sous chef, food services manager, pastry chef and bakery manager. Wake Tech also offers a degree in Hospitality Management.
