RALEIGH, N.C. (February 13, 2018) - Wake Tech’s Health and Fitness Science program has earned accreditation from CAAHEP, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs – the first community college program in the state (and the fourth in the nation) to do so! CAAHEP has recognized the program’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers in the fitness and exercise industry.
“This designation is due to the passionate and extremely hard-working Health and Fitness faculty, who strive every semester to uphold the highest standards,” says Dean of Health Sciences Dr. Molly Curry. “We are very excited to see how this prestigious recognition will benefit our students!”
For the past year, Health and Fitness Science faculty built a self-study based on the standards of CoAES, the Committee on Accreditation for the Exercise Sciences. In October, assessors from CoAES completed a site visit that included interviews with students (past and present), a review of program documents, and meetings with program and college leaders.
The CAAHEP Accreditation award is for 5 years, during which Wake Tech is required to maintain continuous compliance.
Students in the Health and Fitness Science program learn to administer basic fitness tests and health risk appraisals, teach exercise and fitness classes, and provide instruction in the proper use of exercise equipment and facilities. Instruction is centered on bridging the gap between health and exercise science and practical application in the workplace.
