Technical Standards

These technical standards reflect abilities necessary for a student to complete the requirements of the Health & Fitness Science curriculum. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, "A qualified person with a disability is one who can perform the essential function of a job with or without reasonable accommodation."

Read the standards carefully and seek clarification if necessary.

• Interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals, families and groups from a variety of social-emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds.
• Physical abilities sufficient to move weight from the floor or barbell to its desired location.
• Visual ability sufficient for physical assessment of body alignment during exercise performance and maintenance of environmental safety.
• Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective client care.
• Cognitive and perceptual abilities to progress through the coursework and apply skills gained to a professional level.
• Critical thinking ability sufficient for professional judgment.

If a Health & Fitness Science student believes that he or she cannot meet one or more of the standards without accommodation or modifications, the college must determine, on an individual basis, whether or not the necessary accommodations or modifications can reasonably be made.
