Wake Tech Honored for Being 'Bicycle Friendly'
College Recognized by League of American Bicyclists
RALEIGH, N.C. (November 3, 2023) – Wake Tech is one of only a handful of community colleges to be honored with a Bicycle Friendly University award by the League of American Bicyclists, an advocacy organization supporting bicycling and cyclists' rights. The award recognizes Wake Tech's efforts and achievements in enabling and supporting safe, accessible bicycling at Scott Northern Wake Campus.
"It is inspiring to see so many universities committing to the vision of a Bicycle Friendly America," said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. "These institutions, including Wake Tech, are leading by example and helping to set the standard for better bicycling. Each Bicycle Friendly University acts as a trailblazer to develop and promote safer, more accessible transportation infrastructure and supportive programming for new bicyclists in their communities."
Promoting green transportation is just one component of Wake Tech's long-standing commitment to sustainability throughout its programs and campuses. The Scott Northern Wake Campus is one of the most environmentally friendly campuses in the nation and the first college or university campus in the U.S. to have all its facilities LEED-certified.
Wake Tech Green Trek is a college initiative to encourage students and employees to use carpools, buses, bicycles and walking – with the goal of reducing the number of cars on the road. On November 3, Green Trek will host the 2nd Annual Rolling Through Fall bike event, in which participants explore the Neuse River Greenway Trail near the Scott Northern Wake Campus. Last year's inaugural event was a huge success, with more than 20 people enjoying a fall bike ride and learning more about cycling as an option for their commute to campus.
"We’re extremely proud to receive this recognition," said Zachary Lang, Wake Tech Sustainability & Transportation Coordinator, "and it is especially exciting to be honored as one of the few community colleges on the list! Wake Tech is very serious about doing everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint and to promote the health and well-being of our campus community."
Along with the award, the League will provide Wake Tech with access to a variety of tools, resources and technical assistance to continue to support people who bike. The Bicycle Friendly University program now includes 220 colleges and universities in 46 states and the District of Columbia and is part of the organization's Bicycle Friendly America program. The program also awards communities and businesses with certifications as part of its mission to make bicycling safer and more accessible.
