Science and Fun Collide at STEM Day

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 2, 2025) – Science, technology, engineering and math came to life during STEM Day.

Hosted by Wake Tech's Mathematics & Science Division at the Scott Northern Wake Campus, the event highlighted STEM education to inspire students to explore STEM careers.

Students, employees and members of the public engaged in fun hands-on activities like digging for fossils and experiencing virtual reality goggles at the more than 30 tables representing different STEM programs, clubs and organizations.

"This is a great event," said Kaylyn Jennings, a Wake Tech Nursing student. "Seeing all the different demonstrations can inspire kids or people who plan on changing their careers."

Wake Tech Geology Senior Professor Stephanie Rollins, who coordinated the event, said she hopes attendees left excited and inspired about STEM education and careers.

"From biology, geology, chemistry, physics and everything in between, we're showcasing it all here today," Rollins said.

Students also learned about STEM-related clubs at Wake Tech and talked to STEM professionals from various North Carolina state departments about their jobs.

Amanda Crenshaw, a Wake Tech alumna and an environmental scientist with the North Carolina Division of Air Quality, said the college inspired her passion for STEM.

"I took a wide breadth of classes relating to STEM at Wake Tech," Crenshaw said. "I learned a lot about different subjects, and that helped me decide on my career path."

STEM education helps students build a strong foundation for careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, preparing them to think critically and creatively to solve global challenges.

Wake Tech has STEM centers and labs on four campuses – collaborative environments where students can work together, share ideas, support each other and interact with faculty and industry professionals.

The college also offers a unique undergraduate research program for students. The STEM Academic Research and Training (START) program gives students the opportunity to participate in faculty-mentored research projects as paid interns. This experience increases their competitive ability in higher education and the STEM workforce, develops their technical skills and enhances their academic experience.
