Public Learns About Ways To "Give Back"

Wake Tech Teams With AARP to Offer Volunteer Fair

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 7, 2010) - Adults of all ages came to Wake Tech's Main Campus today to learn about volunteer opportunities in their community. As a new spirit of service sweeps the country, Wake Tech's Plus 50 Program and AARP teamed up to host a Volunteer Connection Fair. More than 25 organizations were represented, from museums to healthcare facilities. They were all looking for adult volunteers in a variety of capacities.

"Wake Tech's Plus 50 students are always looking for opportunities to learn and grow, both personally and professionally - and to give back to their communities," says Plus 50 Director Pat Fontana. "This Volunteer Connection Fair was a chance for them to "connect" with area organizations looking for adult volunteers, just like them!"

The Fair also helped promote AARP's new "Create the Good" campaign, and its website, www.createthegood.org. The website offers an electronic resource to connect citizens with local volunteer opportunities.

"Our Create the Good toolkits are a wonderful way for would-be volunteers to find specific activities they can carry out in their communities, both group activities and one-on-one interaction," said Suzanne Black of AARP North Carolina." "We provide specific, step-by-step guidance for people and groups who really want to be involved in serving their communities but who may be a little unclear about how to get started."

"Wake Tech's Plus 50 initiative is designed to engage our students in learning, training and volunteer and service activities," says Fontana. "AARP's Create the Good program is a natural fit with our mission."
