Wake Tech and IBM Present STEM Summit

RALEIGH, N.C. (October 11, 2011) - Community college faculty from across the state, including 160 from Wake Tech, attended a summit today to discuss ways to enhance education in STEM fields - science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The summit was made possible with a $10,000 donation from IBM. It was held during the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association's annual meeting at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel & Convention Center in Durham.

Those who attended the summit participated in sessions on a variety of topics, including nanotechnology, health informatics, and distance learning. IBM's Academic Initiative was also highlighted. Stephen Gold, the Director of WW Marketing and Global Education for IBM, was the keynote speaker. He stressed the importance of analytics in STEM education. "In 2018 there will be a shortage of analytical professionals in the United States," said Gold. "There is a need for community colleges to develop curriculum that will train students for these jobs of the future."

The growth in student enrollments in the STEM fields is creating a need for more community college faculty with expertise and training in science, technology, engineering and math. In addition to community college instructors, educators from universities and public schools, as well as business leaders attended the summit.
