New Wake Tech Scholarship Honors President
RALEIGH, N.C. (October 18, 2011) - Wake Technical Community College has a new scholarship program focused on leadership, vision and community service. Raleigh residents Mark and Rachel Selisker have donated $25,000 to launch the Stephen C. Scott Presidential Scholars Program, named after the college president. The endowed program will allow students to participate in leadership development while pursuing studies at Wake Tech.
The Seliskers are both Wake Tech graduates: Mark in the Business Administration program; Rachel in Accounting. Rachel is also past-chair of the Wake Tech Foundation Board and has been a Board member for five years. "Wake Tech inspires students to become their best," she says, "and Dr. Scott's innovative leadership is their model. He encourages excellence in a way that has a ripple effect throughout the entire community. My hope is that this scholarship program will reflect the values he's instilled and continue to encourage and inspire."
The Scott Scholars program has several components:
- Each scholar will receive up to $3,500 per year to cover tuition, fees and books.
- Each scholar will receive a college-issued laptop to use while in the program.
- Each scholar will be paired with a mentor from Wake Tech's senior administration.
- Each scholar will participate in student-focused leadership development during the academic year.
- Each scholar will participate in a summer internship working in a community nonprofit.
In addition, each scholar will meet individually with the college president twice each year to discuss leadership, vision, and community service - and to provide feedback on the program. At the end of the year, scholars will make a capstone presentation to the president, highlighting their experience as a Scott Scholar and outlining their plans and vision for the future.
The Foundation's goal is to raise $1 million to support four Scott Scholars each year.
