Wake Tech Alum Wins Prestigious Scholarship Award

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 18, 2012) - Matt Purvis, a 2010 graduate of Wake Technical Community College, has been selected to receive NC State University’s 2012-2013 College of Engineering Faculty Senior Scholarship Award. Purvis, an NCSU student in electrical engineering, represented his department in a competition against eight other top students to win the award, which recognizes academic, extra-curricular, and community achievements. As this year’s recipient, Purvis receives a $5,000 scholarship award and a certificate; his name will be added to a plaque that lists annual award winners.

Purvis transferred to NCSU after earning his Associate in Science/Pre-Engineering degree at Wake Tech. He is pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees concurrently at NCSU in electrical engineering - and maintaining a 4.0 GPA. He says Wake Tech played a role in his success. “The instructors at Wake Tech really prepared me to reach my goals at NC State,” says Purvis. “It’s been a lot of hard work, but it is definitely paying off!”

Purvis served in the U.S. Army from 2002-2008. He is a member of the student chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is an Eagle Scout. He lives in Garner with his wife and two-year-old son, and currently works as an intern at Signalscape Inc. in Cary.
