Wake Tech Student Receives National Recognition

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 20, 2012) - Wake Tech student Jon Charest has been named a 2012 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Charest is one of 50 students from two-year and community colleges across the country to receive the honor. The winners were selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership potential and community service. He will be listed with other winners in the April 23rd issue of USA TODAY.

As a Gold Scholar, Charest receives a $1,500 scholarship and a special medallion. Fifty other students were recognized as Silver Scholars, and 50 students received Bronze Scholar status. Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the achievements of students at two-year colleges and is the largest honor society in American higher education.

Charest, who lives in Raleigh, will graduate next month with an Associate in Arts degree and plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in economics and international studies. His goal is to work for the U.S. State Department. Before attending Wake Tech, Charest served almost ten years in the U.S. Marine Corps as an avionics technician and an embassy guard. He is a member of the Wake Forest Rotary Club and volunteers with the Salvation Army.
