Wake Tech Employees, Partners Recognized for Excellence
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 23, 2012) - Wake Technical Community College President Stephen Scott recognized 15 employees and four community partners for their dedication to the mission and vision of Wake Tech. The awards are sponsored annually by the Wake Tech Foundation, which receives and administers private sector funds for programs at the College. US Foodservice sponsored the awards dinner at the Raleigh Convention Center and Cynthia Marshall, President of AT&T North Carolina, served as guest speaker.
Seven faculty members received the college’s Excellence in Teaching Award:

• Shelley Kane - Business Technologies
• Kristin Kubly - College Readiness & ILC
• Carolyn DeSimone - Computer and Engineering Technologies
• Kathryn Allen - Continuing Education
• Joan Romano - Mathematics and Sciences
• Brenda Maddox - Health Sciences
Eight staff members received the Excellence in Service Award:
• Gayle Greene - Executive Level
• Benita Clark - Dean Level
• Kelly Deal - Directors and Managers
• Scott Fellows - College Support - Professional
• Princess Solomon - Student Support - Professional
• Noah Spencer - College Support - Technical/Paraprofessional
• Katherine Beasley - Student Support - Technical/Paraprofessional
• Sara Jones - Clerical
Each faculty and staff winner received a plaque and a cash award. In addition, two winners were named Wake Tech’s Instructor of the Year and Staff Member of the Year and will represent Wake Tech at the statewide NCCCS Excellence Competition in 2012.
The two winners are:
• Kristine Kubly, Instructor of the Year
• Gayle Greene, Staff Member of the Year
In addition, Wake Tech honored four community partners:
SAS Institute was named Corporate Benefactor of the Year for its support of Wake Tech over the past 11 years. SAS has donated more than $215,000 to the Wake Tech Foundation, investing in scholarships for some of the most vulnerable students, supporting the Fostering Bright Futures fellowship for foster youth, and offering internship opportunities to compensatory education students.
The Individual Spirit of Giving award went to Martha Mann Smith of Apex. To honor her late husband, Smith established the Louis C. and Martha Ruth Mann Smith Endowed Scholarship to assist Nursing students at Wake Tech. Scholarships such as this one have a tremendous impact on student retention and success.
This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Lesa McCabe, a 1995 graduate of Wake Tech’s Dental Assisting program. After 10 years in private practice, McCabe became a dental assisting educator at Cape Fear Community College. She now serves as a curriculum consultant for the American Dental Association and volunteers for the Mission of Mercy Clinic, providing care to underserved patients.
Wake Tech Trustee Harvey Montague was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award. Montague has served on the Wake Tech Board of Trustees since 1996. As chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee, he has offered his expertise as a developer to assist Wake Tech in renovations and land acquisitions. Montague is active in the Apex Rotary Club and has helped secure scholarship support for students in that community interested in attending Wake Tech. He has also been instrumental in the development of WakeMed Cary Hospital and the Kraft YMCA in Holly Springs.
