Wake Tech Business Student Wins Prestigious National Honor
RALEIGH, N.C. (July 30, 2012) - Wake Tech student Fiaunna Shivers has won a prestigious honor in Phi Beta Lambda’s National Leadership Conference competition, held June 24-27 in San Antonio, Texas. Phi Beta Lambda is the national student academic organization for business and leadership. Shivers, the president of Wake Tech’s local PBL chapter and vice president of the central region, earned first place in the Future Business Executive competition – the top award given at the conference. She finished above students from such highly-regarded schools as Alabama State University, Temple University, and the University of Texas.
Shivers was awarded the top prize after answering mock interview questions on leadership, business staffing, accounting, and marketing. As first place winner in the Future Business Executive competition, Shivers receives a $750 scholarship and a special plaque.
Shivers will graduate next May with an AAS degree in Business Administration/HR and an AAS degree in Business Administration. She plans to transfer to NC State University to earn a bachelor’s degree. Shivers would like to continue to pursue a master’s degree in Business Administration and a doctorate in Veterinary Medicine. Her goal is to open a veterinary teaching hospital. Shivers is the founder of a feline rescue organization called Penellopee's Way Inc. and the owner of Earth Essentials, a company specializing in natural soaps and bath products. Shivers lives in Raleigh with her companion and three children.
Four other Wake Tech students took home awards in Phi Beta Lambda’s National Leadership Conference competition:
- Dan Lawler earned 3rd place nationally in Accounting Principles.
- Mareo Wainaina earned 2nd place in Contemporary Sports Issues and 6th in Sports Management & Marketing.
- Evan MacIntyre placed 10th in International Business.
- Zac Drake placed 10th in Accounting Analysis & Decision Making.
Eight Wake Tech students qualified to compete at the National Leadership Conference by winning at the statewide Phi Beta Lambda competition, held in April of this year in Charlotte. They were among 2,000 students who showcased their leadership skills in competitive events against universities and colleges from across the United States.
