Wake Tech Campus Police Force Swears in New Officers
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 14, 2012) - Wake Tech’s new campus police force added ten law enforcement officers to its ranks today. NC Supreme Court Justice Paul Newby swore in the officers at Wake Tech’s Public Safety Education Campus. The force will provide a safe, secure learning environment for students, faculty, and staff at Wake Tech’s five campuses and two training centers.
The group includes a 30-year veteran of the NC Highway Patrol and a retired New York City police officer, as well as former sheriff’s deputies, State Capital Police officers, and university police officers. Together they bring decades of experience to the job.
Chief Michael Penry will lead the force and also supervise Wake Tech’s existing security personnel. Major Paul Quinn is Assistant Chief; both men are former Wake County sheriff’s deputies from Garner.
The newly sworn-in officers are:
- Michael Banks, administrative lieutenant
- Gabriel A. Abreu, administrative sergeant
- Steven Greene, patrol sergeant
- Wyatt Cumbo, patrol sergeant
- Wendy West, patrol corporal
- Markus Dupree, patrol officer
- Reginald Newberne, patrol officer
- Jared Ollison, patrol officer
- James Strickland, patrol officer
- Charles Corr, patrol officer
Wake Tech’s Board of Trustees approved the establishment of a campus police force in April 2012, to deter crime, mitigate violence, and provide rapid response in emergencies. Fourteen North Carolina community colleges have similar campus police forces, as do all the universities in the UNC system.
