RALEIGH, N.C. (March 19, 2013) - Adults currently in the process of taking the GED exam should be aware that major changes in store for next year could affect their ability to complete the exam as planned. The current five-part GED exam will be replaced at the end of 2013 with a new assessment. Anyone still working on the old exam at that time will have to start over.

Wake Tech is encouraging students to focus on completing and passing all five parts of the exam as soon as possible. Scores from the current version of the GED exam will not transfer to the new 2014 assessment. Once it’s released, old exam scores will expire.

“We want to make sure everyone is aware of this deadline,” explained Monica Gemperlein, dean of Wake Tech’s College and Career Readiness Division, which administers the GED program. “Support is available at Wake Tech to help adults prepare to take the parts of the exam that they still need to pass.”

Wake Tech has the largest GED program in the state and graduates as many students as a large public high school in Wake County. In 2012, Wake Tech awarded more than 800 high school credentials through the GED program. The college has already awarded more than 200 GED’s this year.

“A high school credential is incredibly important,” says Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen C. Scott, “as students progress to higher education, a better job, and new career pathways. It can help them overcome many of the obstacles they face in trying to improve their lives.”
