Wake Tech Launches Fourth MOOC Venture

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 5, 2015) - Students who need a little extra help with college-level reading and writing skills can now find it online. Wake Tech’s latest MOOC, or Massive Open Online Course, is titled Mastering the Fundamentals of Reading and Writing. The course is designed to improve students’ ability to express themselves clearly, think critically about new ideas, and conquer test-taking anxieties. It includes interactive videos and practice sessions.

The MOOC format is self-paced and free of charge, inviting large-scale participation and open access to higher education via the web. It is available to students anywhere in the world. Students do not earn college credit for taking the MOOC.

This is the fourth MOOC Wake Tech has produced. Wake Tech became the first community college in the state (and one of the first in the nation) to offer a MOOC when it launched Introductory Algebra Review in 2013. That course supplements seated classes in developmental math and helps students prepare for the NC diagnostic math exam. The college launched two more MOOCs the following year. The Chemistry Concepts MOOC, or CheMOOC, covers matter, energy, atomic theory, bonding, molecular structure, stoichiometry, acids and bases, basic organic chemistry, and more. The Computer Basics MOOC improves computer literacy and explains computer operating systems, how to use various computer applications, and how to view internet content with browsers.
