RALEIGH, N.C. (September 11, 2024) – Some Wake Tech students are taking advantage of an often-overlooked gardening season: fall planting.
Students in HEA-110: Personal Health and Wellness completed a new vegetable garden on the Southern Wake Campus by planting cabbage, lettuce, broccoli and a variety of herbs, including parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme! They were the last of the plants that had been grown from seeds indoors over the summer.
"It's no secret that homegrown vegetables are better for you," instructor Lauren Musolf told the students. "Fresh produce retains more essential vitamins and minerals than what you buy in the store. It's just healthier."
In addition to healthy eating, Musolf points out that gardening supports physical, emotional, social and intellectual wellness. The garden is located behind Building N, the Physical Fitness building. The ultimate goal is to make the garden area a gathering space for students to relax and unwind. Future plans include rocking chairs, tables, cornhole boards and other amenities for students to take advantage of between classes.
Personal Health and Wellness is an elective course, not only for Health and Fitness Science majors, but also for students in other programs. Students will maintain the garden throughout the fall and share the harvest with The Nest Food Pantry, which has locations on each Wake Tech campus.
