College Welcomes New Provost

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 1, 2024) – Wake Technical Community College is pleased to announce Chad Ray as the new Provost of Engineering, Biotechnology, Trades and Transportation.

In his new role, Ray will be responsible for leading seamless collaboration of the Engineering Technologies and Skilled Trades, Biotechnology and Transportation Technologies divisions, as well as managing operations of the new Wake Tech East location in Wendell.

Ray brings to Wake Tech deep experience and a strong record of success in both higher education and industry. He most recently served as the global director of learning and capabilities at Stanley Black & Decker, where he spearheaded the design and execution of global project management frameworks, enhanced manufacturing strategies and led pivotal process improvements. He previously held leadership positions at both Intel and Nike, where he led major organizational and cultural transformations, pioneered flexible work approaches and advanced learning methodologies. During his tenure at Nike, Ray was presented the prestigious Founder's Award by legendary Nike founder Phil Knight.

Prior to his industry experience, Ray served as dean of STEM at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, where he led a team of 105 full-time and 450 part-time faculty across six campuses between 2003 and 2012. While serving as dean, he led the development of the nation's first and most comprehensive mechatronics lab, instituted the first-ever Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IHK) manufacturing certificate recognized outside of Germany, and developed a state-of-the-art machining program that resulted in the college becoming the premier provider for machinists for NASCAR race teams and gas turbine manufacturing. Ray's leadership in program development and support of almost $10 million in federal grants and private donations contributed to Central Piedmont's statewide leadership in fostering apprenticeship programs during his tenure.

With extensive experience in leading international and virtual teams, Ray excels in creating engaging learning methods and fostering professional advancement. His ability to leverage cross-cultural competencies to engage stakeholders across geographic borders has been a cornerstone of his success.

Ray strongly believes in the power of teamwork and aims to create an environment where Wake Tech can thrive together.

"I am committed to ensuring that we win together as a team and supporting each of you in reaching our collective goals," said Ray. "My door is always open, and I encourage open communication and collaboration. I am eager to hear your ideas, learn from your experiences and work alongside you to make Wake Tech the best it can be. Let's roll up our sleeves and do incredible work together."

Ray holds master's and bachelor's degrees in industrial engineering from North Carolina State University, along with numerous certifications.
