Wake Tech Welcomes VP Harris

RALEIGH, N.C. (August 16, 2024) – Wake Tech hosted a very important visitor Friday.

Vice President Kamala Harris presented her economic policy proposal at the Hendrick Center for Automotive Excellence on the Scott Northern Wake Campus. Harris is the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

Approximately 300 supporters filled the Capital Automotive Lab, where hands-on Automotive Systems Technology and electric vehicle training takes place. Another 100 reporters and photographers from the local and national media were also there to capture the event. Wake Tech College Police worked with dozens of local law enforcement officers and the U.S. Secret Service to keep the Hendrick Center safe and secure. No classes were disrupted by the visit.

Harris started her speech with a special shout-out to the college: "To all the leaders that are here today, including the students and instructors here at Wake Tech, thank you all!"

Wake Tech SGA President Silas Johnson and Student Ambassadors Cheval Batts and Teniel De Lucia served as ushers for the event. Gov. Roy Cooper, Attorney General Josh Stein and Wake County Board of Commissioners Chair Shinica Thomas offered remarks before Harris came out.

"It's an honor to have the vice president on our campus," said Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls. "We welcome all elected officials, including those running for office, to see the great work we're doing to prepare the workforce of today and tomorrow."

Wake Tech does its best to accommodate requests from any political candidate or elected official, as long as the events are not disruptive to normal college operations and class schedules. Students are always the college's top priority. Political candidates pay standard fees for the use of Wake Tech facilities.
