New Online Elementary Teacher Licensure Program Available

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 16, 2024) – People with bachelor's degrees have a quick new way to transition to teaching. Wake Tech is launching an online certificate program this fall that offers an accelerated pathway to becoming a licensed elementary school teacher.

The college has joined the Cultivating Carolina Classrooms initiative, a collaboration between the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and the North Carolina Community College System that provides individuals with a bachelor's degree a streamlined opportunity to elementary education licensure.

Sometimes called lateral entry, the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) is a strategic initiative that aims to address the shortage of elementary school teachers.

The six course, online program offers Fall and Spring enrollment options and can be completed in as little as 18 months. Students receive one-on-one mentoring and coaching with experienced Wake County Public School System elementary school educators. Assignments are grade-specific, so instruction can be tailored to the needs of each participant.

The estimated cost of the program is less than $2,500. Scholarships and financial assistance are available.

"Today, more than ever, we need skilled, well-qualified teachers," said Dr. Ileetha Groom, director of K-12 Education and the EPP at Wake Tech. "Many new teachers transition from other professions. Our new program will prepare them by focusing on literacy, STEM and classroom management skills. We work closely with the local school system to ensure our program integrates with school mentoring, as well as local and state requirements."

The accelerated elementary teacher preparation program is the latest educator training program offered at Wake Tech. The college also offers programs to train individuals as early childhood educators and university transfer degrees specific to licensed arts and sciences teacher preparation.
