Community Outreach Success

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 10, 2024) – Wake Tech is excited to welcome five new degree students this fall thanks to its community outreach partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County.

Last September, the college teamed up with the Boys & Girls Clubs, providing a full-time college liaison to support outreach and career exploration activities for middle school and high school club members throughout the Raleigh area.

During the past year, Workforce Community Outreach Officer CC Hardy worked on site with seniors, helping them research academic programs and colleges and explore job opportunities to help them solidify their plans after high school graduation.

To broaden their experiences and gain a better understanding of career options, the students toured Wake Tech campuses and had the opportunity to enjoy lunch at Flavors, the college's full-service restaurant led by students in the Culinary Arts, Baking & Pastry Arts and Hospitality Management programs. They also had fun getting facials from students in the Esthetics program and shadowed two District Court judges during a visit to the Wake County Courthouse.

A Senior Signing Day was held June 5 to celebrate these students, along with six other high school seniors who are moving on to college and the military after graduation. In addition to Wake Tech, the graduates are starting their futures at Barton College, East Carolina University, North Carolina Central University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the U.S. Marine Corps.

Harold H. said he plans to study business administration at Wake Tech and hopes to one day own a construction company.

"Working with Coach CC made me less anxious about the application process," he said. "We walked through the Wake Tech application and FAFSA® process together, and she broke it down in a way that I could understand, answering all my questions. My mom was so happy when I told her I had finally submitted my Wake Tech application and was going to college in the fall."

Wake Tech also provides outreach to other instrumental community organizations, including Juntos and Communities in Schools.
