RALEIGH, N.C. (March 21, 2024) – Hundreds of middle and high school students put their math skills to the test Thursday at Wake Tech.
They competed in the North Carolina Regional Math Contest, which is held annually on the Southern Wake Campus. The event included students from Wake, Durham, Orange, Johnston, Lee, Guilford and Vance counties.
Students compete at four levels that correspond to the years of math they've completed: Levels I, II and III, plus Comprehensive, for those who've had more than three years of math.
The following students won top honors:
- Level I: Jack Chen, Smith Middle School, and Ryan Guo, Davis Drive Middle School
- Level II: Harry Liu, Ligon GT Magnet Middle School
- Level III: Kevin Tang, Panther Creek High School
- Comprehensive: Brian Zhang, Enloe High School, and Alan Chang, Green Level High School
The top performers move on to state final competitions in their categories.
Wake Tech is one of nine regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Math Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state-level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
