Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society Celebrates New Members

RALEIGH, N.C. (April 14, 2023) – Wake Tech's Beta Alpha Zeta chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa honor society celebrated 99 new members during an induction ceremony Thursday night on the Southern Wake Campus.

The international honor society for two-year colleges offers opportunities for scholarship, leadership, service and fellowship for students in associate degree programs. This year, Wake Tech's chapter earned the prestigious Five Star Level status, which included developing an Honors in Action Project that focused on academic research and service related to the topic of economics of play.

The ceremony featured guest speaker Dr. Gabby McCutchen, Wake Tech's Provost of Arts & Sciences. She encouraged the inductees to be lifelong learners and continue to strive for success either at Wake Tech or in the next phase of their lives.

"It is our hope that Wake Tech has prepared you to blaze a new trail in your personal life, at the university that you transfer to, in your new career and in the world at large," McCutchen said. "As you blaze that new trail, I encourage you to reflect on how you have been successful at Wake Tech and how you can leverage this momentum to prepare for success in the next phase."

Chapter officers for 2022-23 are Athena Wang, president; Jayla Dennis, vice president, Perry Health Sciences Campus; Rachel Smoke, vice president, Scott Northern Wake Campus; Zoe Horne, vice president, Southern Wake Campus; Johnny Vargas Viera, publicity secretary; McKenzie Thomas, assistant publicity secretary; and Nola Ruit Craig, recording secretary.

Horne will serve as one of four officers on the PTK Carolinas Region officers team next year. In March, she was elected vice president of North Carolina for 2023-24.

Family members and friends proudly watched as inductees were presented with a white rose, symbolizing beauty, purity and intelligence.
