Fostering Bright Futures Announces Partnership with Triangle Family Service
New Grant to Fund Financial Literacy Workshops for Foster Youth
RALEIGH, N.C. (August 11, 2010) - Former foster children attending Wake Technical Community College will soon have a new tool to help them succeed. Triangle Family Services (TFS), a non-profit dedicated to helping families in crisis, is sponsoring a series of financial literacy workshops for students enrolled in the Fostering Bright Futures program at Wake Tech. The workshops are funded by a $28,000 grant from Chase Card Services. The goal is to provide former foster youth with the financial skills needed to live independent lives.
The workshops will be held on the third Saturday of every month, beginning in September. They mark a new partnership between Fostering Bright Futures and Triangle Family Services.
"We're excited to have the support of Triangle Family Services," says Patrick Lindsey, Chairman of the Fostering Bright Futures Advisory Board. "This partnership will provide a unique opportunity for our students to learn about financial responsibility, which is a major key to success in every phase of their lives."
"We want to help break the cycle of poverty," says Triangle Family Services CEO Alice Lutz. "Training young people in financial management can help low-wealth communities create and redistribute wealth for the benefit of the whole community."
Fostering Bright Futures is a Wake County-based program made possible through a partnership of Wake Technical Community College, the Wake Tech Foundation, Wake County Human Services, and the Fostering Bright Futures advisory board. Its goal is to help former foster youth in Wake County earn a college degree at Wake Tech by providing access to academic tutors, life mentors and financial assistance. Nationwide, only 2% of foster children who graduate high school go on to earn a college degree.
