Celebrate Wake Tech’s 50th Anniversary at Annual Culinary Arts Showcase

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 1, 2013) - Celebrate Wake Tech’s 50th anniversary with a Triangle tradition! The college’s annual Culinary Arts Showcase returns to the Raleigh Convention Center on Tuesday, April 30 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. This year’s theme is Golden Moments in recognition of Wake Tech’s 50thanniversary.
The Culinary Arts Showcase displays the talents of students, local chefs and industry professionals from across the Southeast. Food lovers of all ages will be treated to a variety of award-winning culinary creations – cakes, pastries, and cold food platters – which will be on display for viewing. The highlight is a live, two-hour cake decorating competition, in which winners receive cash prizes and a “Golden Whisk” award. Wake Tech instructors and students will offer an ice carving exhibition, and live food demonstrations. High school students will enter cakes for judging and compete in a cupcake decorating contest. In addition, some of the Triangle’s top restaurants will provide samples of their most popular menu items, while the North Carolina Department of Agriculture’s Goodness Grows Campaign serves up locally grown treats. Hands-on fun for kids and a silent auction of “foodie” favorites will round out the event.
Tickets are $8 for adults in advance or $10 at the door. Student tickets are $5 (children under 5 free). Admission includes five coupons for food tastings. US Food Service is the title sponsor.
The Culinary Arts Showcase is the culmination of one of the largest American Culinary Federation (ACF) competitions in the United States. In a closed session on Monday, culinary students, instructors and industry professionals from across the region will compete for medals and cash prizes in several categories, including Cold Foods, Pastries, and Showpieces. ACF judges will select the winners and provide one-on-one critiques. Award-winning entries will be on display at the public event on Tuesday.
The Culinary Arts Showcase started in 1994 as a final project for culinary and baking students in the second year of Wake Tech’s associate’s degree program. Proceeds benefit the Wake Tech Culinary Arts Fund.
