Wake Tech Hosts First Annual “Road Scholars 5K”
RALEIGH, N.C. (March 18, 2013) - More than 300 walkers and runners converged on Wake Tech’s Northern Wake Campus for the first annual Road Scholars 5K Run/Walk. The event was organized in celebration of Wake Tech’s 50th anniversary and raised more than $5,000 for student scholarships. The Wake Tech cheerleaders, accompanied by Talon the eagle, led a group stretch before the race got started. ABC 11 news anchor Heather Waliga was there to kick it off and present awards at the end.
First place for the men went to Jim Stephens of Wake Forest, who finished the race in 18 minutes, 30 seconds. The fastest woman to finish was Rachel Vidrine of Cary, who finished in 25 minutes, 27 seconds. The youngest male to finish was 13-year old Tyler Garretson of Fuquay-Varina, who completed the course in 24 minutes, 13 seconds. The youngest girl was ten-year old Alita Buck of Cary, who had an impressive time of 30 minutes, 5 seconds. In the oldest age group, 68-year old Edward Bigler of Raleigh completed the race in 29 minutes, 32 seconds, while 65-year old Susan Hatch of Raleigh completed the race in 41 minutes, 47 seconds.
Rex Healthcare was the platinum sponsor for the event. Other sponsors included Dickey’s Barbeque Pit, the town of Knightdale, and Wake Stone Corporation. The official Road Scholars 5K logo was designed by Wake Tech student Christopher Parker.
