Wake Tech Hosts Regional Math Contest

RALEIGH, N.C. (March 21, 2013) -  More than 350 middle and high school students put their math skills to the test today at Wake Tech’s Main Campus. The 22nd annual Regional Math Contest, hosted by Wake Tech’s Mathematics and Physics Department, included student competitors from Wake, Chatham, Orange, Cumberland and Guilford Counties. They competed in four categories: Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II and Comprehensive.

Four students earned top honors:

• Algebra I: Wujeh Evan Kim, Guy B. Phillips Middle School

• Geometry: Nikhil Reddy, Carnage Middle School

• Algebra II: Angela Deng, Carnage Middle School

• Comprehensive: Franklin Chen, Enloe High School

WRAL Meteorologist Greg Fishel was on hand to present awards. The top eight performers in Algebra I and Geometry, the top 10 in Algebra II, and the top 11 in Comprehensive move on to state finals competitions in these categories.

Wake Tech is one of fourteen regional contest sites, and students who excel at any site are invited to compete in the state finals. The Regional Contest is part of the State Mathematics Contest, initiated in 1979 by the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the State Department of Public Instruction to provide state level competition in mathematics. Participants come from public schools, home schools and private schools.
