Wake Tech Employees And Partners Recognized For Excellence
RALEIGH, N.C. (April 29, 2013) - Wake Technical Community College President Stephen Scott recognized 14 employees and four community partners for their dedication to the mission and vision of Wake Tech. The awards are sponsored annually by the Wake Tech Foundation, which receives and administers private sector funds for programs at the College. US Foodservice sponsored the awards dinner at the Raleigh Convention Center.
Seven faculty members received the college’s Excellence in Teaching Award:
- Michael Storey – Applied Engineering and Technologies
- Jacqueline Popp – Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
- Thomas Byrnes – Business and Public Service Technologies
- Heather Berry – Academic Success and Transition
- Chris James – Computer Technologies
- Meghan McIntyre – Mathematics and Physics
- Dale O’Neal – Health Sciences
Seven staff members received the Excellence in Service Award:
- Dana Teague – Office of the President
- Elizabeth Shelton – Student Services
- James Reaves – Business and Industry
- Rebecca Neagle – Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences
- Brendon Koagel – Administrative Affairs
- Cheryl Keeton – Mathematics and Sciences
- Lorena Davalos – Business and Public Service Technologies
Each faculty and staff winner received a plaque and a cash award. In addition, two winners were named Wake Tech’s Instructor of the Year and Staff Member of the Year and will represent Wake Tech at the statewide NCCCS Excellence Competition in 2014.
The two winners are:
- Meghan McIntyre, Instructor of the Year
- Cheryl Keeton, Staff Member of the Year
In addition, Joe Cooley was named the 2013 Student of Academic Excellence.
Wake Tech also honored four community partners:
Wells Fargo was named Corporate Benefactor of the Year for its support of Wake Tech over the past 19 years. Wells Fargo has invested more than $276,000 in the Wake Tech Foundation, which includes a recent $250,000 donation to Wake Tech’s major gifts campaign, “The Ripple Effect.” This generous gift will fund the Wake Tech Wells Fargo Center for Entrepreneurship, which was established in 2010 to offer resources for small business owners and would-be entrepreneurs throughout the region.
The Individual Spirit of Giving award went to Barbara Bays of Raleigh. Wake Tech has been fortunate to receive close to $100,000 from Bays over the last five years. In addition to her philanthropic efforts, she tutors students at the junior and high school level in math, science, and SAT prep. She has also tutored Wake Tech students.
This year’s Distinguished Alumni Award was presented to Bryan Thornton, a member of Wake Tech’s first graduating class (then called W.W. Holding Industrial Center). He earned a degree in Electrical Installation and Maintenance and went on to get more training in electronics in the U.S. Army. Thornton had a successful career designing cell phones before he retired in 2008.
The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Uliana Dobre. She tutors compensatory education students in the College and Career Readiness Program to help improve their reading comprehension and language arts skills. During the fall semester, Dobre volunteered four hours a day, Monday through Thursday.
