RALEIGH, N.C. (November 14, 2024) – Wake Tech students expanded their cultural awareness and celebrated diversity at the annual International Day cultural fair on Southern Wake Campus.
Students from 25 different countries donned vibrant native clothing, shared popular foods and drinks, and showcased art, music and performances for a large crowd of students, faculty and staff. Wake Tech has students from more than 130 countries this semester.
Nil Patel was excited to talk to students about his Indian homeland. He explained the tradition of wearing the kurta pajama, a traditional tunic with sleeves and a buttoned jacket, for weddings and festivals.
"I'm wearing this today to help people understand the history and culture of Indian clothing," Patel said. "We wear these at special times to show respect for our culture."
Ilayda Buyurai, from Turkey, said she enjoyed talking about the cultural history and diverse flavors of Turkish cuisine with students.
"We are excited to share our homemade baklava today, and after trying it, now students know it's delicious!" she said.
Planned by the International Friends Club, International Day has been a popular student event for the college for more than 20 years to promote respect and understanding of all cultures.
