Celebrating Apprenticeship
RALEIGH, NC (August 30, 2024) – Some Wake Tech apprentices are celebrating their new careers, while a group of high school students is ready to embark on the same journey.
Thirteen apprentices in the NC Triangle Apprenticeship Program (NCTAP) officially earned their Journeyworker certification, signaling that they have successfully mastered the skills in their fields. All have already graduated with electrical, automotive or engineering degrees and were offered full-time positions by their employers.
NCTAP offers high school students the opportunity to take classes at Wake Tech at no charge, thanks to the NC Youth Apprenticeship Tuition Waiver, while receiving onsite training, with pay, at a local employer. After high school graduation, they transitioned from youth apprentices to apprentices as part of the U.S. Department of Labor's Registered Apprenticeship program.
"Apprentices do things that others have not," Wake Tech President Dr. Scott Ralls told the graduates. "You've made a commitment that others have not. Apprenticeship leads to leadership, and you will thrive as a result of that."
At the ceremony at Wake Tech's Southern Wake Campus, another 31 students signed on with local companies to begin their apprenticeship journey. They were hired by companies such as Anderson Automotive, Buhler, Chapel Hill Tire, Schunk, Siemens and others.
It's NCTAP's 10-year anniversary, and this was its largest graduating class. Wake Tech also offers apprenticeships through WakeWorks, a partnership with Wake County. To learn more about apprenticeship opportunities at Wake Tech, visit apprenticeship.waketech.edu.
